Background
A tiefling from a mixed family, Even's father is human and his mother a tiefling. He is the oldest of three siblings and the most magically proficient, as well as the only child to inherit the tiefling heritage, much to his mother's chagrin. His family is moderately rich, but new money; his father is an ambitious businessman who built his wealth though a mix of clever investment and penny-pinching. Even's upbringing was not lavish and anything that required spending money was carefully scrutinized by both parents.
That included the education of their children. Even was sent to boarding school at a wizard academy in his early teens, where he stayed and learned the basics of his craft for five years. Eager to impress and genuinely hungry for knowledge, Even carved out a niche for himself at school amongst the more proactive of the wizardly book-learners.
For a time after graduation, Even returned home to his parents' estate -- but the hunger for learning that had been a part of him all his life had been stoked into a fire by the tales of his professors and the lore in the school library. He had been put through his education by his parents with the expectation that he return home and help make a name for their family in Aglarond, but he knew that once he committed to that road, he would be on it for life.
The final straw was finding out that his parents were already searching for a suitable high-status marriage for him.
He pitched to his parents a grand tour, a year or two of travel, to broaden his horizons, to furnish him with arcane secrets from afar, and to offer him one last chance for exploration before submitting to the family business.
His father told him that was fine, but he'd have to finance the trip himself with his own earnings from the family coffers. A snake's deal: such a trip would be staggeringly costly if he was to travel in the modest luxury his family kept, which would take years to earn. So instead, Even took the handful of gold he could call his own, packed his bag, and set out for the famous Waterdeep. True to his word, his father did not stop him.
He camped, he stayed in cheap inns, he did small tasks along the way for coppers. It was a harsh adjustment and a dangerous and unpleasant trip, and by the time he made it to Waterdeep he had very little left to his name. But, approached by a woman named Lily and a man named Boce at a tavern called the Yawning Portal, Even found his first real job.
Waterdeep provided a rich tapestry of educational experiences for Even, very few of which were ones he expected. In addition to Lily and Boce, he joined forces with Sanger and Oran, another human and a tiefling respectively.
He knows that at some point, he's going to have to return home to his duties and obligations, but he's trying to put that idea off as long as possible.
Personality
Even is sharply clever and at times high-strung, with a keen mind for detail. He is naturally understated but has learned to assert himself, especially when he's sure he's right. He is often eager and curious, but sometimes feels on the edge of being overwhelmed by his own engagement -- except when he gets on the scent of something he's truly fascinated with and then any hint of forced interest or hesitance falls away.
Knowledge lights Even up. The sharing of it, the gathering of it, and especially the learning of secrets, are the things that drive him. He is endlessly inquisitive about the world and the workings of magic especially.
Though to Even other people are a more complicated kind of mystery, he can be similarly inspired by really getting to know someone. He is a scholar, and slightly awkward for having spent most of his socially formative years isolated with other scholars, but Even genuinely likes other people and, if given even half a chance, will automatically assume the best of anyone. He has a sarcastic streak, but he doesn't tend to get mean.
In a way his upbringing has been sheltered -- his family is not made up of other such optimists, but neither did any of they seek to disillusion him when he was young. Because he was clever and tenacious and privileged, he was allowed to remain naive, and has carried this into adulthood as a stubborn optimism.
His cleverness, however, comes at the cost of not really being able to turn it off. At times, the racing of his mind can wind him up into intractable anxiety. He does not like feeling ignorant, and he does not like being mentally idle, and if he is kept so for any length of time he gets bored and antsy and upset. He also trends towards a totally unexamined arrogance, especially when it comes to magic, and though he likes learning and teaching he can end up talking down to people.
Magic
Even's skillset pulls from DnD 5e rules.
Magically, Even's specialities run towards fire. In addition to being able to influence the size, shape and colour of flames, he can summon a gout of fire to shoot from his palms, and engulf an enemy in flames when they land a blow on him. He is also resistant to damage from any fire.
He has a small suite of set spells, which he can rotate through day to day. These include conferring small amounts of good or bad luck (bane and bless), save himself from taking damage (feather fall, absorb elements and mage armour), the comprehension of languages, and the detection of magic. He can also send a short message to a person he knows.
Much of his learning has also involved onomancy, or the use of names to confer additional power to spells. In addition to more easily being able to cast spells upon a person or creature if he knows their true name, he can also compel a creature to tell him their name.
